My Own True Story of GLP-1 Weight Loss
When I began GLP-1 weight loss medication six months ago, I wasn’t expecting fireworks. I was 54, almost 13 stone, working out several times a week, eating whole and healthy foods, and still… nothing changed. My body seemed locked in fat-storage mode, and no amount of discipline shifted the scales. If anything, the scale crept in the wrong direction.
I couldn’t make peace with it, but I also didn’t know what else to do. I told myself this was just midlife, just menopause, just stress. But deep down, I felt betrayed by my own body.
I never imagined I’d see my weight begin with a 9 again. Yet here I am-over three stone lighter, standing on the scales in disbelief. But the real story? It isn’t just about weight.
The narrative around GLP-1s has hardened too.
“You’ll put the weight back on.” “It’s not sustainable.” “Once you stop, it all returns.”
That hasn’t been my experience. Why? The finish line wasn’t getting to my goal weight. In fact there is no finish line. It was about me building a sustainable system to maintain the new lighter me.
I’m actually lighter now than when I reached my goal weight. And more importantly, I’m not anxious about regain.
That confidence comes from having a system in place – which is why I created a system that’s kept my weight steady:
Surviving Trauma, Finding Calm

Weight gain rarely happens in isolation. For me, it was woven into years of surviving abusive relationships. First, a marriage that was financially controlling and drained me through seven relentless years in the family court system. Later, a relationship that left me walking on eggshells, living with coercion, fear, and the constant flood of cortisol.
My body never stood a chance-it was permanently on high alert, buckling under the strain of stress.
When that relationship finally ended, it was brutal but final. He was arrested. For the first time in years, I wasn’t living in fight or flight. And instead of falling apart, I found a clear path forward.
That’s when I realised GLP-1s didn’t just quiet my appetite – it seemed to quiet my whole system. The anxiety I used to feel over the smallest things began to lift. It gave me space to heal, not just physically, but emotionally too.
The Menopause Surprise
And then something happened that I never expected: my menopause symptoms vanished.
-
The brain fog that made work and daily life a challenge? Gone.
-
The low moods? Levelled out.
-
The broken, restless sleep? Replaced with deep, restorative nights.
I didn’t believe a weight-loss injection could touch any of that. But here I am-clear-headed, sleeping soundly, calmer than I’ve felt in years.
I don’t think I ever had “food noise.” What I had was noise from stress and fear, and it sent my cortisol levels through the roof. After one particularly bad night with my previous partner, I had blood tests the next morning with my menopause doctor. The results showed dangerously high cortisol. That’s what living in an abusive relationship does.
Now, that noise is gone. I’m not white-knuckling my way through fight-or-flight responses. I’m eating less, naturally. Same workouts. Same diet. Less stress. Totally different results.
It feels like someone handed me back the keys to my own body.
The Practical Realities of Life on GLP-1s Weight Loss Jabs
Of course, it’s not all magic. Living with GLP-1s means learning a new rhythm. A few lessons I’ve learned along the way:
-
Hydration is everything. GLP-1s suppress thirst as well as appetite, so I make a point of drinking 2 – 3 litres of water a day.
-
Protein matters more than ever. Especially with strength training, to protect muscle as the weight drops. I always keep cooked chicken or salmon in the fridge.
-
Side effects are real. Mine were minimal, but there was an adjustment phase-sulphur burps, tiredness, nausea. I learned to manage them with water, movement, and protein.
-
Nutrients count. Eating less means fewer micronutrients, so supplements are part of my daily routine: soluble fibre, turmeric, magnesium.
-
Movement protects progress. Resistance training is essential to hold onto muscle. I work out four times a week with weights, kettlebells, and slam balls.
-
Mindset shifts everything. GLP-1s aren’t punishment. They’re a tool. And for me, they’ve been liberating-freeing me from the things that once controlled me.
Beyond the Scales: What I’ve Really Gained
Yes, the weight loss is what people ask about first. It’s the headline. But the bigger win is how I feel. For me, GLP-1 weight loss has been about much more than the scales.
-
I feel calmer, steadier.
-
I feel confident wearing clothes again. I’m not covering myself up.
-
I feel clear-headed after years of stress and anxiety.
-
I feel resilient, able to handle life’s challenges instead of being consumed by them.
It’s not just about looking different in the mirror. It’s about living differently in my own skin.
A New Chapter at Midlife

I used to think menopause symptoms were just something to be endured-that my body would get older, heavier, and slower, and there was nothing I could do. But GLP-1s have shown me something else: midlife can be a reset.
The number on the scales is only part of the story. What matters more is the return of energy, balance, and joy. I’m lifting heavier in the gym, sleeping deeper, laughing more freely. My system feels regulated. My mind feels quieter. My body feels like mine again.
I don’t know how long I’ll stay on GLP-1s-especially with the huge price hikes. That decision can wait. Right now, I’m focused on living fully in this chapter: strong, calm, and present.
Final Thoughts
If you’re curious about GLP-1 weight loss, know it’s not a quick fix. And when you combine with movement, mindfulness, and self-compassion, it can be life-changing.
For me, this has been more than a weight loss journey. It’s been a story of healing – after abuse, stress, trauma, through menopause, and into midlife with renewed strength and hope.
I don’t know what comes next. But for the first time in a long time, I feel good. Really good. And that, more than the number on the scale, is what matters most.
